To kick off the BBC’s live seven-party election debate, a question from the public was on Rishi Sunak’s absence at the D-day event in France where international leaders came together. The prime minister has faced heavy criticism after leaving the 80th anniversary of D-day early to record a TV interview. Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt said Sunak’s early exit was ‘very wrong’ and ‘the prime minister has rightly apologised for that, apologised to veterans, but also to all of us he was representing’. She went on to say she was from Portsmouth and wishes ‘by the end of this week, all of our veterans feel completely treasured’
